Safe Schools NC kicks off its inaugural Safe Schools Conference, “Advancing Equality in Education,” this coming March 3rd in Raleigh, NC.   Educators, students, and community leaders are invited for a six hour workshop about developing safe schools for North Carolina’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.  Educators and students/community leaders will enjoy separate tracks in order to concentrate on their specific needs.  Educators will also earn Continuing Education Units by attending this one day workshop.

Topics covered include.

·         Advising Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs)

·         Intersecting identities of race/ethnicity, sex, gender, sexuality, and class

·         Building your GSAs

·         Confronting bullying within your school

The conference will be held at the Raleigh offices of NCAE (http://ncae.org).  Costs for adults are $25, and for students  $15.  Lunch will provided.

Presenters at the 2012 Safe Schools Conference include


Scott Teagarden, founder of Common Ground, a college-based diversity retreat that focuses on race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender and the stereotypes and discrimination that surround those three topics.  He is also a board member of Safe Schools NC.


Elic Senter, a former high school teacher and current educational consultant at NCAE, who regularly presents on issues surrounding bullying and LGBT students.  He is the president of Safe Schools NC.
